Discover traditional cheeses of Sicily: LACTIMED organizes one week under the sign of typical dairy products

Cascavaddu, tumazzu, maiurchinu, piacintinu, picurinu sicilianu: what do these words have in common? They all refer to typical cheeses of Sicily which audiences will have the opportunity to discover during the dedicated promotion week organized by LACTIMED project from 24th May to 1st June 2014.

Visits to dairy producers, cooking demonstrations, taste workshops and much more! The week of traditional Sicilian cheeses will be marked by a series of events to take place according to the following programme:

• Palermo (24th May, Villa Favorita park from 10 am to 10pm): a market of cheesemakers will allow visitors to better know typical dairy products of Sicily. A press conference will be held in the evening.

• Enna (25th May): a visit to dairy producers from the Enna province will showcase the pastures from which the milk used for the production of traditional cheeses of Central Sicily is originating. The visit of a cheese laboratory producing ‘piacentinu ennese’ will shed light on production practices and allow participants to taste local products.

• Milazzo (31 May - 1st June from 6pm to 11pm): two evenings at Milazzo castle will include a market of typical Sicilian cheeses, a ‘taste theatre’ with the participation of well-known Sicilian pastry chiefs as well as taste workshops.

LACTIMED at a glance

The LACTIMED project aims to strengthen the production and distribution of typical dairy products in the Mediterranean region through the coordination of local industries, the support to dairy producers and the promotion of their products on local and international markets. In order to reach these goals, a Mediterranean network will be created to increase the commercial value of these products, to foster the integration of local value chains as well as to strengthen the production and promotion on national and international markets.
