GMI project: education among youth to foster a change in behaviour towards the environment

Promoting the sustainable development related to waste treatment and recycling, encouraging environmental education among young people and ensuring a change in their behaviour towards the environment. These are the aims of "Green Med Initiative" (GMI), a project approved under the strategic call.

During the three years of implementation, the project will develop an incentive-based scheme to promote environmentally sustainable practices schools and universities. More specifically, a considerable quantity of used plastic bottles and cans (estimated amount of 20 tons) will be collected through Reverse Vending Machines placed in 200 schools and universities across six countries of the Mediterranean area. At the same time, in order to encourage youth to strengthen their environmental responsibility and knowledge, environmental awareness activities will be implemented. Finally, 18 agreements will be signed by local authorities in view of creating the necessary legislative framework to foster recycling.

GMI is coordinated by the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Beirut and Mount Lebanon. Other chambers of commerce as well as environmental and regional associations and municipalities coming from six countries participate in the project:

• Regional Association of the Municipalities of Sardinia (Italy, Sardegna)
