ShMILE 2: focus on diffusion of Ecolabel to Mediterranean tourist accommodation services

The reduction of environmental footprint of tourist accommodations and the diffusion of the "Ecolabel" in the Mediterranean area will be the main topics of the "ShMILE 2" launching conference, which will take place at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Nice Côte d'Azur on October 5th. The Joint Managing Authority will participate in the event together with the representatives of the organisations involved in the project.

Funded under the first call for proposals, ShMILE 2 (De l’expérimentation à la diffusion de l’Ecolabel en Méditerranée - From the experimentation to the diffusion of the Ecolabel in the Mediterranean) aims to promote the environmental-friendly management among tourist accommodation owners.

The European Ecolabel for tourist accommodation services was created in 2003 by the European Commission (decision 2003/287/EC). The award of the Ecolabel to an accommodation structure recognises that it has the following assets:

• Limited energy and water consumption
• Reduced waste production
• Use of renewable resources
• Promotion of environmental education

In order to extend the Ecolabel approach to the Mediterranean countries, ShMILE 2 will inform, train and support the professionals of the tourist accommodation sector on the opportunities offered by environmental certification schemes.

By the end of the project, it is expected that 180 tourist accommodation services will have been accompanied in the process of obtaining the Ecolabel certification.

ShMILE 2 is coordinated by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Nice Côte d'Azur and brings together the expertise 11 organisations from 6 different countries: Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Jordan and Tunisia.

The project will last 24 months and its total budget is € 1.998.998 of which € 1.799.098 ENPI contribution (90%).
