Brief description of the organization: Fair Trade Lebanon (FTL) is a Lebanese NGO created in January 2006 that thrives to promote economic practices that are fair, reliable, sustainable and respectful of environment. Committed toward small producers, women’s cooperatives and small-scale family businesses, located in un-favoured areas, FTL fights against rural exodus, poverty and social disintegration due to various crises that have marked both, the country and the region. Through capacity building and awareness raising activities, FTL succeeded in accompanying, to date, more than 14 food-processing cooperatives and farmer groups (650 direct beneficiaries) throughout their production and the improvement of the quality of their products. After identifying potential markets and key products with regional specialties, FTL has then managed to link small producers with international importers (in France, Germany and Canada), and thus, handling the whole export process and guarantying that the range of products complies with the requirements for the European and North-American countries. After more than four years of activities and social commitment, FTL was granted in 2010 a membership within the World Fair Trade Organization (www.wfto.com) and given an international recognition as an active and full member taking part in the fair trade global movement. Moreover, UNDP has awarded to FTL a certificate in recognition of its successful contribution to the “101 Stories to Tell” (www.undp.org.lb/communication/news/NewsDetail.cfm?newsId=142). UNDP also selected one of FTL’s coops for its “Live Lebanon” call for contribution (www.livelebanon.net/market_opportunities_cooperative.aspx).
