Project title: Integrated Management of oases
Brief description of the project: Since ancient times, the culture of the oasis has allowed humankind to colonize the most hostile areas of the world - the desert areas of Central Asia, Middle East and North Africa. Oases dominate around 30% of the land emerging along the arid land belt linking Africa, Asia, the Iberian Peninsula and South America, from the Sahara to Mongolia and from Spain to the Peninsula of Baja California Sur. Around 150 million people live in oases. The harshness of the landscape has forced its inhabitants to develop a social organisation based on the wise management of the irrigation system which allowed the development of crops appropriate to the conditions of the environment and where the date palm (phoenix dactylifera) is the engineer specie of this agro-ecosystem, as they modify climatic, edaphic and structural conditions within the Oasis. Oases are threatened more and more by the inter-relationships of desertification, climate changes and loss of their biological diversity therefore they represent an ideal example to study and develop strategic lines for sustainable development and international cooperation between countries that, all in all, share a common identity based on an excellent management of environmental resources UNESCO put the dot on the spot about the need of implementing strategies of sustainable development as well as means of preserving oases and desert landscapes and set up a series of project directed to raise awareness and involving civil society and institutions in the conservation of oases cultural and natural heritage. the oases are a perfect example for the investigation of strategic lines of sustainable development of natural resources and international cooperation between different countries that share a common culture based on the management of natural and cultural values. Tourism Analysis the tourist product in oases should be the result of a multidisciplinary strategy within the concept of UNESCO cultural landscapes and based in the recognition of oases global identity as a trade mark. To promote tourism in order to develop oases local population independence of action in combating poverty. To protect, restore and re-vitalize natural heritage as well as tangible and intangible cultural heritage. To strengthen the capabilities of local actors and provide multidisciplinary training programs. To strengthen national, sub-regional and international cooperation. To promote local awareness and training in cultural and natural values The requirements for the protection of the oasis ecosystem and palm groves will be defined. A network of oases tourism circuits will be established. To promote cooperation by establishing cross-border cultural tourism routes. To implement new information technologies to promote oases cultural and natural heritage The Oasis project falls into the context of the follow-up to the World Ecotourism Summit (Quebec, Canada, 19-22 May 2002), of the Rio+10 Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg (South Africa, 26 August – 4 September 2002), of the WTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism and of the Plan of Action of the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity. OASIS project follows the principles of UNESCO and UN Conventions in the treatment of concept of cultural landscape we understands that the future of oases, as cultural landscapes, is closely linked the development of a holistic project aimed to stimulate oases tourism potential from a global perspective. In this sense, it is of paramount importance promoting a comprehensive, innovative tourism strategy. This project takes into account various scenarios involved in the development of tourism such as urban planning, identification of different access via by transport, cultural an environmental heritage, etc. Since this project is international, it will first link the oases of the countries involved into a network and then develop cross-border tourist routes to highlight the wealth of the heritage. National, subregional and international cooperation will be strengthened through the sharing of practical experiences and exchanges in the fields of the environment, cultural heritage and tourism. Heritage as well as local traditions will be identify and cultural and natural tourism products will be promoted, to ensure economic vectors such as agriculture and services, revitalizing activities that should be part of sustainable tourism development.
