Musical Intercultural Identity on the Mediterranean Basin_the Iberian Peninsula Diaspora Case Study

Brief description of the project: In the Middle Ages, until the Christian unification of the Iberian Peninsula at the turn of the XVI century, the entwined poetic subjects and musical forms of the Mediterranean Basin expressed the cultural unity among Muslims, Jews and Christians. At this point, the dispersal and exile of Jews and Muslims into various parts of the Ottoman Empire, in particular Salonika and Constantinople or into the Arabic-speaking territories gave birth to nowadays concept of Diaspora. The definition expanded throughout the 20th century to embrace the involuntary and forced displacement of other peoples. At the heart of this project, is the desire to relate to these transnational cultures, examining diaspora, particularly women’s role, as means of reflecting on our own identity.
Main objectives – issues to be addressed: Recovering Intangible Heritage (Music) Promoting intercultural dialogue; Bringing Mediterranean citizens of different nationalities and different languages together and giving them the opportunity to participate in common activities, such as music. Raised awareness on the richness of the cultural and linguistic environment in North/South Mediterranean Promote mutual understanding and tolerance, contributing to the development of a respectful, dynamic and multifaceted MED identity.
Expected results: Creation of the 1st Mediterranean Sephardi Music Congress in Algarve, Portugal; Implementing in music school curricula of partners, the teaching of traditional and early music instruments from the Al-Gharb Al-Andaluz region Establishing a Mediterranean Diaspora Choir, formed by locals and migrants in the partners municipalities Publishing a Book on Sephardi and Moorish Iberian Diaspora Music, with written scores
