Sewage sludge as source of energy

Brief description of the project: Sewage sludge, produced from urban wastewater treatment plants, in huge quantities (around 2 million tons/year in 2009 in Tunisia, ONAS, 2010), could be converted into higher value-added products (bio-fuels, biomaterials, heat and electricity) using innovative applications such as pyrolysis and gasification. The objective of the project is to promote the use of sewage sludge from urban wastewater plants, in order to produce energy useful in public buildings. This will be accomplished by taking into consideration the whole chain: sewage sludge pre-treatment (solar drying), conversion into energy carriers via pyrolysis and gasification, gas purification and storage and the use of biofuels. These processes should be robust and reproducible regardless of climatic and geopolitical constraints.
Main objectives – issues to be addressed: The project aims to: 1. Develop the energy recovery of pre-dried sewage sludge 2. Promote the sewage sludge pretreatment via solar drying 3. Analyze the legal framework of the use of biofuels in public buildings 4. Upgrade the energy efficiency of these buildings.
Expected results: 1. Sewage sludge volume reduction 2. Energy recovery from sewage sludge 3. Achieving carbon Emissions Reductions 4. Energy efficiency and reduction of energy consumption 5. Stimulation of economic growth and enhancement of the national energy security
