SUMMMA - Sustainable Management of Mediterranean Macrophytes

Thematic objective: B.4 Environmental protection, climate change adaptation and mitigation
Priority: Priority B.4.4 Incorporate the Ecosystem-Based management approach to ICZM into local development planning, through the improvement of intra-territorial coordination among different stakeholders
Brief description of the project: SUMMMA project aims to provide public administrations and managers with guidance to carry out a systemic planning of fishery management and use of coastal ecosystems. Thanks to this project, the cascading effects of fishing and harvesting on macrophyte communities will be incorporated as ecosystem-based management approach to ICZM into local development planning through the improvement of coordination between research institutions, resource users and decision makers.
Main objectives – issues to be addressed: Identify how unbalances of the relationships among predators-herbivore sea urchins-macroalgae due to the artisanal fishing affects benthic communities. Define the carrying capacity of ecosystems and the critical thresholds of fishing activity in the incidence on the ecosystems’ conservation. Enhance skills and capacities of administrations and operators in charge for planning and monitoring and strengthen the cooperation among different target groups and the concertation of multiple interests.
Expected results: Identification of dynamic connections of larval transport of coastal areas and the recruitment of natural population. Identification of the capacity of restore macrophyte forests through the manipulation of the sea urchin abundance. Guidelines for spatial planning in areas where fisheries of sea urchins and fish predators need to be controlled. Drafting a legal regional framework for sea urchin harvesting based on an ecosystem based approach
