FARM-NET: A Network for Enhancing Water Efficiency in Irrigated Agriculture

Brève description du projet : Agriculture is a major consumer of surface and ground water in the Mediterranean countries. Recent reports showed that irrigation consumes 80% of total water consumption in this region. This project aims to study the impact of climate change on irrigated agriculture, by highlighting the significant climate elements that contribute in such impact. Furthermore, to enrich such study with accurate information, a network of data acquisition and analysis will be deployed in different countries at western Asia, Northern Africa and Southern Europe. The network will be implemented as a smart sensory system that automatically reports readings from different regions. Such network will provide rich and valuable information that are related to: climate, irrigation, and plants specification. Furthermore, it will allow researchers to validate satellite data from this region. Therefore, researchers can model such impact and develop solutions to minimize it.
Objectifs principaux – problèmes à traiter: 1)Developing a data model that highlights the impact of significant climate elements on irrigated agriculture. 2)Developing a smart system to validate satellite data using data collected from the ground earth. 3)Develop solutions for minimizing water consumption in irrigated agriculture in the form of: policies, smart products, and monitoring systems. 4)Developing a human-to-plant communication environment to minimize over irrigation and maximize the efficiency of water resources.
Résultats attendus: 1)A scientific investigation of the significant climate elements that directly impact the water consumption in agriculture sector. 2)A smart network of more than 1000 nodes that will be distributed over different countries in Mediterranean region. 3)An automated data validation tool of satellite data using real-time readings from ground areas. 4)Developing a smart system that is able to irrigate plant according to the environmental variables and provide low and high level distance monitoring.
