Reinforcing blue-green infrastructure initiatives toward improving urban resilience in the Mediterranean region

Brève description du projet : The traditional grey approach to urban infrastructure is neither a solution to water-related problems induced by urbanization, density and surface sealing. Blue green infrastructure services representing the sum of natural and manmade infrastructure covering the hydrological cycle, natural habitat, ecosystems and urban greenspace can increase the adaptability and resilience of urban infrastructure by improving the capacity of mitigation to handle the growing risks of climate change, including weather extremes. The Mediterranean Sea region has been identified as one of the main climate change hotspots due to water scarcity, concentration of economic activities in coastal areas, and reliance on climate-sensitive agriculture. The restoration and redevelopment of integrated ‘blue’ and ‘green’ infrastructure could help to reduce the impact of such expected flood events and apply a sustainable stormwater management within urban areas.
Objectifs principaux – problèmes à traiter: The project aims at enhancing the concept of blue-green infrastructure toward improving urban resilience and mitigating flood impacts. The project demonstrates the potential use of blue-green infrastructure in the Mediterranean region with considering urbanised watersheds scale analysis, modeling, and planning. It will apply an innovative approach by quantifying the spatial trade-offs and synergies between the urban water system components.
Résultats attendus: 1-A best practice transfer theme reflecting the potential of transferring and implementing different success models from EU 2-A special website was developed for the project dissemination; 3-Blue-Green infrastructure labs were established in different Mediterranean countries (project partners). 4-The trade-offs and synergies between BGI and the urban water components (urban water budget, climate function, urban hydro-ecosystem structure, and urban hydro-ecosystem functions) were quantified.
