Brief description of the organization:
The project focus on the development of productive and sustainable tourism systems along the Mediterranean region areas. All valuable information obtained by methodical research will be catalogued on a new data system. Analyzes will enable to: Quantify the ecological and economic costs and benefits of conventional tourism and the various existing forms of ecotourism. Also the various data should work as a stimulus for the participants in designing a new scientific form of sustainable ecological tourism that will maximise its positive impacts on the Mediterranean ecosystem. Therefore the aim is to work together with local communities in building a form of sustainable and desirable tourism based on active interaction between the tourists and the ecosystems they are visiting. Thus a new concept of the tourist/ecosystem relationship will be explored; one that views the tourist as an agent for positive conservation and restoration activity that can actually improve ecosystem health while providing directly and indirectly income opportunity for the region’s citizens. Finally tourism, when it does not generate a spirit of inquiry, promotes spectacle over cognitive experience. This form of resource use reflects values tightly bound to a culture of consumerism. The result is development which is often less than optimal from the standpoint of the local community and also with regard to sustainability. Companies that organize such opportunities are often located far from the region of impact, thus reducing the net income stream to local communities.
