ICZM-PORS: ICZM stakeholders alignment via Posidonia reef stabilization:
Brief description of the project: The project aims at creating a stable and replicable synergy between international players from the program regions, aimed at stabilizing and extending Posidonia Oceanica reefs, using an innovative system which has significant efficiency and cost advantages with respect to older approaches. The project will serve as a pilot for collaboration between technology providers, local research entities and local authorities. A possible extension of the approach to much wider sections of the Mediterranean coast will have a significant impact on the coastal zones affected. Protection, consolidation and extension of Posidonia Oceanica reefs and meadows is considered one of the most effective ways to contrast coastal erosion. The method is sustainable, replicable, uses local workforce and strengthens collaboration between technology providers and local research institutions, in line with the ICZM spirit.
Objectifs principaux – problèmes à traiter: The objective is to establish an active collaboration between technology providers, local research institutions and local authorities, to implement a project capable of consolidating and possibly extending a section of Posidonia Oceanica reef. This type of underwater meadow is beyond reach for traditional approaches to reforestation, given the very high energy levels of the areas of interest. Furthermore, this ecosystem is particularly fragile and rapidly receding due to anthropic effects.
Résultats attendus: The expected result is to use stabilization of Posidonia reef via innovative means as a tool to develop replicable international synergies.
Partners already involved: Jordan
Partenaires recherchés: Research partners, authorities, NGOs in Tunisia, Egypt, Israel, Spain
Budget total prévisionnel: 2M euros, to be finalized once final list of partners has been identified.
