Rainwater Harvesting and Solar Pumping

Brief description of the project: With the increasing water demand and the prospect of climate change, the problem of water scarcity in Jordan deepens and becomes more critical. Hence, there is an urgent need to enhance water efficiency and to explore further alternatives to ensure water availability using innovative approaches. The revival of traditional water harvesting and management techniques is a promising for supplying freshwater in the face of increasing water scarcity and growing demands. Furthermore, solar energy can be used in pumping water to reduce the cost of irrigation for farmers and gardeners in poor urban areas. This project is essentially a “demonstration case” aiming at educating farmers and urban dwellers a “new water culture” necessary for addressing the current and future water scarcity challenge.
Objectifs principaux – problèmes à traiter: To revitalise and reintroduce traditional rainwater harvesting combined and improved with innovative techniques and methods in two rural and urban governorates, namely Jerash and Zarqa governorates , as a tool for water availability and climate change adaptation at local level. To use solar energy will be used to pump water from these reservoirs to irrigated farm crops and gardens in poor urban areas.
Résultats attendus: • Rainwater harvesting will positioned as a helpful tool for climate change adaptation at a local level • Multi-stakeholder partnerships will be developed for local rainwater harvesting initiatives. • knowledge and sharing of experiences on aspects of rainwater harvesting systems and solar water pumping and approaches.
Partners already involved: farmers in Jerash Governorate and urban gardeners in Zarqa governorate
Partenaires recherchés: Donor organisations funding the installation of rainwater harvesting systems and solar pumping system. Experts in installations of water harvesting systems and solar pumping systems Experts in developing of the Educational material to raise awareness and educate students toward sustainable water use and rainwater harvesting in rural and poor urban areas
