B-ECOSYSTEM, Integrated Coastal Areas Management to protect maritime environment from Ballast waters

Thematic objective: B.4 Environmental protection, climate change adaptation and mitigation
Priority: Priority B.4.1 Support sustainable initiatives aimed at finding innovative and technological solutions to increase water efficiency and encourage use of non-conventional water supply
Brief description of the project: Ballast water dropped to the sea by ships that don't need it anymore can be the origin of several problems of introduction of invasive species in natural protected areas. In order to improve the control of ballast water, it is needed to face it in a common approach within the Mediterranean Sea. The project seeks cooperation between ports and public authorities from both North and South countries to also better implement international, European and national normative regarding it.
Main objectives – issues to be addressed: Improve the governance of ballast water and reduce its impact on ecosystems. Enhancing the capacity of public authorities to plan, manage, use and monitor their coastal ecosystems in a sustainable manner, using an effective participatory approach with relevant stakeholders and local communities
Expected results: Newly adopted integrated strategies and tools for the sustainable management of coastal zones, etc., including appropriate reflection on the ecosystem approach and developed through a participatory exercise.
