Brief description of the project: Fruit flies are considered as serious invasive agricultural pests capable to adapt to a broad range of climatic conditions. They are responsible of quantitative and qualitative losses in the mediterranean basin. Until now, chemical treatments constitute the main conventional control method against fruit flies. However, fungal entomopathogens are important biological control agents worldwide that are still under explored. The identification of local entomopathogenic strains that well adapt to the Mediterranean conditions is worthy. The aim of Biopest-Med is to elaborate a formulation of a biopesticide for use for large-scale pest management programmes in mediterranean area.
Main objectives – issues to be addressed: Identify, evaluate and develop new pesticides for fruit flies control in the mediterranean basin. Support fruit producers for the use of biopesticides locally produced with high efficiency.
Expected results: -Isolated local efficient entomopathogenic fungal strains (some are already isolated). -Biopesticide formulation (pilot scale) -Field trials at pilot scale and decrease in fruit flies densities -Quantitative and qualitative improvement of fruit production in the pilot area -Possibility of implementation of organic agriculture project by farmers
