Building Capacities in Desalination Technology in the Gaza Strip, Palestine through curriculum development, training and research (DesalBuild)
Thematic objective: B.4 Environmental protection, climate change adaptation and mitigation
Priority: Priority B.4.1 Support sustainable initiatives aimed at finding innovative and technological solutions to increase water efficiency and encourage use of non-conventional water supply
Brief description of the project: Water resources in arid and semi-arid regions, such as the Gaza Strip, are generally under increasing stresses in terms of water quality and quantity In Gaza Strip-Palestine, the Coastal Aquifer is the only natural water resource for about 2million people living in less than 365 km2. This aquifer is extensively utilized to satisfy the increasing agricultural, domestic, and industrial water demands. It represents an extreme prototype model on how several negative factors (unstable political environment, disastrous economic situation, decaying environmental conditions, unplanned and disorganized human activities), are combined together to further deteriorate the groundwater quality and quantity.
Main objectives – issues to be addressed: To strengthen national capacities in desalination for the sustainable management of water sector in the Gaza Strip
Expected results: • Capacity building of the academic staff members through training and academic exchange. • Curriculum development for the civil and environmental engineering departments by the development of desalination course at both bachelor and master degrees. • Design and the implementation of a training course or diploma for local and private sector desalination plant operators and technical staff.
