chemicals and energy production from waste materials

Thematic objective: B.4 Environmental protection, climate change adaptation and mitigation
Priority: Priority B.4.2 Reduce municipal waste generation and promote source-separated collection and the optimal exploitation of its organic component
Brief description of the project: The project brings together a team that has a deep expertise in the broad range of technologies and facilities to be applied and/or developed for municipal waste fractionation and characterization, to fermentation, chemical conversion and scale-up. This includes waste suppliers, laboratory facilities, Innovative SMEs and End-users. A key aspect to make the project successful is bringing together key stakeholders which operate in different sectors (R&D of agriculture, Energy, Fuels, Chemicals, Policy regulators, industry, SMEs etc.). This multi-disciplinary partnership will enable to discuss common bio refinery related topics to develop new technologies that foster the development of bio-based economy.
Main objectives – issues to be addressed: develop 3-bio (chemical, fuels, fertilizers, biopower) from negative organic waste
Expected results:  reduction of green-house gases emissions  efficient and a novel catalyst and processes development for conversion of agricultural wastes into chemicals (5-HMF) and fuels (Bio-ethanol)  Dry anaerobic co-digestion of residues of reducing sugars, agro-wastes and food bio-waste  Up-grading of biogas quality
