Enabling innovative business solutions to prevent the generation of plastics ending up as Marine Litter (InnoSolMed)

Thematic objective: A.1 Business and SMEs development
Priority: Priority A.1.1 Support innovative start-ups and recently established enterprises, with a particular focus on young and women entrepreneurs, and facilitate the protection of their intellectual property rights and commercialisation where applicable
Brief description of the project: Marine Litter has been an issue of concern since the 1970s in the Mediterranean. The problem is exacerbated by the basin’s limited exchanges with other oceans and its densely populated coasts, highly developed industry and tourism, among other inputs of litter. Many initiatives are currently dealing with monitoring and remediation actions but there is still a huge lack of Marine litter prevention actions that would really make the difference to solve the issue in the long run. This project aims at support the development of eco-innovative business solutions to prevent or minimize the use of persistent plastics able to end up as Marine litter.
Main objectives – issues to be addressed: Support the development of eco-innovative business solutions to prevent or minimize the use of persistent plastics able to end up as Marine Litter
Expected results: 1)Defining the innovation challenges in the Med related to the issue of plastics ending up as Marine Litter, 2)Developing/identifying market solutions, 3)Establish a framework to support the switch of existing companies (eg. plastic/packaging producers) and the development of new start-ups.
