H-TURMED
Thematic objective: A.1 Business and SMEs development
Priority: Priority A.1.3 Encourage sustainable tourism initiatives and actions aimed at diversifying into new segments and niches
Brief description of the project: Tourism is a major pillar of the economies of the Mediterranean with high growth projections due to the vast array of natural resources and historical, archaeological and cultural heritage. However there is a very heavy focus on ‘sun, sand and beach’ product with prevalence of mass low cost type of tourism in many destinations. The seasonality of this demand affects the sector placing an increasing pressure on natural resources, while some cultural and historical resources remain underused both during season and off-season. This is especially relevant in small, high density historical areas where encompassing the needs of the different stakeholders involved is an ongoing challenge, making it of extreme importance to develop an integrated sustainable tourism model to diversify into new segments and niches that help minimize resource use and impact while help reduce seasonality and expand the use and valorisation of natural, cultural and historical heritage.
Main objectives – issues to be addressed: In such a framework, the aim of H-TURMED is Mediterranean historical and/or Heritage cities to pilot and test actions to contribute to achieving increased diversification of tourism offer through the promotion of local and territorial assets / drivers in off-season periods and increased attractiveness of less known touristic assets. H-TURMED shall contribute to developing sectors, national and regional public policies by fostering transferability of emerging good practices and results achieved.
Expected results: - New sustainable touristic products in season and/or off-season periods created in specific niches with a cross-border dimension (historic and heritage related tourism) and co-designed with the local communities - Capacity building of relevant stakeholders involved in project activities - Increased tourist flows visiting less-known touristic assets during season and/or off-season periods - Action plans adopted by local authorities based on results and participatory activities
