Providing decentralized waste management for a community in Lebanon

Brief description of the project: The project aims at providing a waste management solution for a community in the district of Jbeil in Mount Lebanon, that consists of sorting incoming waste, recovery of recyclables, drying of the wet organic fraction, and shredding of the organic and non-recyclable fraction to convert them to green fuel. In parallel, an awareness campaign will be designed and deployed to promote sorting at source of domestic waste. Capacity building on the operation and maintenance of the facility will also be conducted for beneficiaries.
Main objectives – issues to be addressed: Solving the waste crisis at the level of the Jbeil district and diverting waste from landfilling and dumping; promoting decentralization of waste management; promoting awareness relating to sorting at source.
Expected results: 150 tons of waste properly managed on a daily basis and diverted from landfilling; 15% of inhabitants initiating sorting at the source; 45 tons of green fuel produced per day; 200 tons of recyclables (PVC, metals and glass) sold on a monthly basis.
