Unified Grid Code for Mediterranean and North African Countries

Brief description of the project: Worldwide interest in renewable energy based distributed generations (DGs) mandates development of robust grid codes as their contribution to global electrical market share increases in the near future. Consequently, there is a potential to connect Mediterranean countries to form a super-grid for the sake of maximizing the economic aspects of connecting various grids with different peak-loads. Recently established grid codes of European countries such as U.K, Germany and Denmark, are different from each other however these codes focus on critical requirements to be considered in grid operation mainly but not limited to: bus-voltage variation mitigation and active/reactive power control, low-voltage ride through (LVRT) capability, and frequency permissible range of operation. This project aims to develop a MENA unified grid code for DGs following European countries codes' major aspects while preserving the uniqueness of the region and the special requirements for each MENA country grid.
Main objectives – issues to be addressed: Review different EU grid codes. Survey MENA grids and the capacity of the renewable energy (RE) in operation and the future target for their RE production expansion. Develop a grid code which follows EU grid codes and can be applicable to the MENA. Disseminate the outcome unified DG grid code among targeted stake holders. Construction of knowledge based techno-economical network combining electrical authorities and private sector companies working in electrical generation field within MENA.
Expected results: A unified grid code, which follow the EU grid codes, and in the same time can be applicable to the MENA countries. The expected grid code covers major aspects as bus-voltage variation mitigation and active/reactive power control, low-voltage ride through (LVRT) capability, and frequency permissible range of operation.
