Decentralized off-grid ecological sanitation

Brève description du projet : The project aims at providing sanitation infrastructures, saving water and recovering resources - energy, composting and nutrients. The project is based on urine diversion dehydration toilet (UDDT) as the basic design. UDDT is based on urine diversion from faeces with the purpose of enhancing dry organic matter composting for agriculture purposes or biogas generation. Good design plays a critical role in facilitating social learning and is to influence shifts towards sustainable outcomes. Therefore, the bathroom comprises a UDDT toilet, shower, a lavatory, a male urinal.
Objectifs principaux – problèmes à traiter: The issue is the sanitation costs in flat regions where trencher excavation for gravity sewers would be very costly. In addition, since energy would not be unavailable for pumping, sewerage system and a centralized wastewater treatment plant would be inappropriate. It should be mentioned that the same reason would concern sea outfall, even if this type of system is considered a pitfall since contaminant dilution is no longer a sustainable option in pollution control policies.
Résultats attendus: This ecological sanitation is resources-oriented rooted on a effective, affordable and modern sanitation concept. Besides the ecological rational, decentralised approach is also moved by cost savings when comparing to centralised options. The project envisages to inspire a social need for change also. Polution pressures on water resources (increasingly important under scarcity) will be avoided using this sanitation approach.
