Brève description du projet : Agriculture has a very high social and economic relevance in Europe and the whole Mediterranean basin. The various cropping systems have increasingly evolved variable needs of cultivation inputs, namely water and chemicals (fertilizers and pesticides), owing to increasing market quality requirement standards and to the spread of pests and diseases promoted by climate change and global trade. The inversion of this ascending trend, i.e. the optimization of these inputs, is crucial both economically and environmentally. The project aims to exchange knowledge and skills in order to develop and implement eco-friendly methods for agro-ecosystem management in Mediterranean arid and semi-arid areas for a rational use of agriculture inputs. The proposed activities allow the optimization and the rational use of different inputs in agriculture and the improvement of both the quality and the socio-economic impact of the productions
Objectifs principaux – problèmes à traiter: The assessment of the agro-system features in terms of soil organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics, water resource availability and use; the assessment of crop vegetative vigour according to the employed farming practices; the determination of pest and pathogen spread; equipment characterization and adjustment for a sustainable application of chemicals; the economic, environmental and social impact of the employed productive methods and techniques in agriculture.
Résultats attendus: A significant increase of the cropping system suitability is expected through the reduction of chemical and water inputs reducing both the environmental impact as well as the risks for farmers. Final objectives are knowledge sharing, technological transfer and commercialisation of the proposed new sustainable cropping strategies, in order to strength the linkages between research world, industry and other public and private stakeholders operating in Mediterranean Sea Basin Area.
